CLINICAL TRIALS UNIT

It is almost a year since the opening of the Clinical Trial Unit at the Orange Health Service. Stephen Millard moved from Sydney to be the Clinical Trials Manager thanks to the funding support of Cancer Care Western Inc. A registered nurse, Kerry Lenton commenced at the unit at the same time.

296 patients have consented to be involved in trials or partake in studies. The Unit currently has 62 active patients.

It is the Unit's goal to become Donation independent by the end of 2017.

The Unit is not only serving the Central West Community it is working towards accessing patients in remote communities in NSW using 'teletrials' which are integrated through existing Telehealth Systems. An exciting development.

Current open trials cover a range of malignancies including breast, lymphoma and prostate malignancies. The Unit has been selected as one of the first Australian sites to conduct cannabis trials on patients experiencing chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. The Unit is also working with the Melanoma Institute to become the first satellite site for the Institute in the near future.

A big thank you to all our Donors and congratulations to Dr Rob Zielinski and Stephen and the staff at the Unit.

A Big Thank you

Cruisin-along 2017 raises $50,000 for Western Care Lodge

The regional cancer patients who stay at Western Care lodge have been supported by fundraising from the annual Cruisin along Trek, and the highest Corporate sponsor of the event, John David Motors.

Cruisin-Along have supported our efforts in building the Lodge, as well as helped funding of the Cancer Clinical Drug Trials. The funds from this year’s trek will contribute to the upgrades, refit and maintenance of the Lodge as required.

The highest fundraiser for the 2017 Cruisin Along Trek, was the PYBAR Team (aka "PYBASH") headed by CEO Paul Rouse. Their efforts contributed $14,500 to the final 2017 tally. Over the last eight years the team have raised over $100,000 which has supported the Lodge.

The 2017 event has raised just on $50,000. Totalling the amounts raised on the first drive event in 2009 the amount raised by Cruisin Along has now reached close to $700,000.

Next years target is $100,000 and will be a longer trek over 2 weeks through central Australia to “The Rock”.
