CLINICAL TRIALS UNIT

It is almost a year since the opening of the Clinical Trial Unit at the Orange Health Service. Stephen Millard moved from Sydney to be the Clinical Trials Manager thanks to the funding support of Cancer Care Western Inc. A registered nurse, Kerry Lenton commenced at the unit at the same time.

296 patients have consented to be involved in trials or partake in studies. The Unit currently has 62 active patients.

It is the Unit's goal to become Donation independent by the end of 2017.

The Unit is not only serving the Central West Community it is working towards accessing patients in remote communities in NSW using 'teletrials' which are integrated through existing Telehealth Systems. An exciting development.

Current open trials cover a range of malignancies including breast, lymphoma and prostate malignancies. The Unit has been selected as one of the first Australian sites to conduct cannabis trials on patients experiencing chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. The Unit is also working with the Melanoma Institute to become the first satellite site for the Institute in the near future.

A big thank you to all our Donors and congratulations to Dr Rob Zielinski and Stephen and the staff at the Unit.

A Big Thank you

The annual Cruisin' Along Rally 2018 drive raised a total of $45,000 for Western Care Lodge.

The 2018 rally was organized jointly by John and Terry Davis along with support from The Rotary Club Of Orange Daybreak. This year's trip was a huge success, as it was the 10th Anniversary trip for Cruisin Along which was formed in mid 2008.

With a range of cars and drivers - swags, tents and other accommodation, it was a time to remember. The highlight was a plane which accompanied the team, operated by John Pullen and Co pilot John Henderson, the plane offered trips around Uluru with the cost of the flights donated to Cancer Care Western NSW for Western Care Lodge. The funds raised will contribute to the ongoing refurbishment and upgrades required at Western Care Lodge.

Brothers IV Brothers Orange Tour - Saturday 14th July, 2018

Over the last six years The Robertson Brothers and Knox Old Boys Rugby Network have hosted a series of sportsman's lunches, legends rugby games and "Rock for a Cure" Pub Gigs, raising over $620,000 for Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney. The boys do this in honour and memory of their youngest brother Lachlan who passed away in 2013 after battling esophageal cancer for 15 months, age 34 and fellow Club legend Tim Cussell who passed away from Bowel Cancer 2 years later, age 33.

In July this year the boys are expanding their fundraising efforts to include Country NSW and are partnering with the Orange Emus Rugby Club to raise money to improve the quality of life for cancer patients in Orange and the Central West. The beneficiaries of funds raised will be the Western Care Lodge run by Cancer Care Western NSW and the Clinical Trial Program at Orange Hospital. The combination of a sustainable and expanding clinical trial program and the provision of quality accommodation services at the Western Care Lodge meaningfully improves the quality of life for cancer patients in Orange and the broader Central West region. The sustainability of these high quality leading edge programs relies on charitable donations as a major source of ongoing funding.

Proudly supported by major sponsors a2 Milk and Swinging Bridge Wines, the Orange Emus and Brothers 1V Brothers will host an epic afternoon of Rugby and Country Hospitality at Endeavour Rugby Ground, followed by a night of fundraising and rock and roll revelry on site at the Emus Clubhouse.
